What is Nutritional Therapy?
Hippocrates was a Greek medical physician born in 460 BC.
He famously said
"Let thy medicine be thy food,
and let thy food be thy medicine"
He based his medicine on the belief that illness has both a physical and rational explanation.
He believed in the natural healing process of rest, a good diet, exercise, fresh air and cleanliness.
He noted that there were individual differences in the severity of disease symptoms and that some individuals coped better with their disease or illness than others.
The foundational principles of nutritional therapy reflect Hippocrates’ beliefs and uses food as the medicine needed to bring the body's natural systems into balance supporting its natural healing and restoration capabilities.
Nutritional therapy takes lifestyle, genetics, environment and the diet of a person into consideration whilst measuring it against the biochemistry of how the body is supposed to work and that which is known about disease progression.
Food is the primary tool of the trade but often supplements, other synergistic therapies (such as massage, colonic hydrotherapy, counselling etc) and lifestyle adjustments are amongst the tools that may be suggested to help achieve results.
No two people are alike and therefore the one to one process of the Nutritional Therapy Consultation helps to establish the best possible route to optimal wellness for each individual person.
What Conditions Can Nutritional Therapy Help?
Typically within 4 – 6 weeks of assessment and adherence to the recommended programme it would be
usual to see improvements and symptomatic relief.
- High Cholesterol and High Blood Pressure
- Male and Female Fertility
- Digestive disorders (such as IBS, Coeliac, Ulcerative Colitis etc)
- Weight Management & Obesity
- Stress, Anxiety, Depression & Fatigue
- Frequent Infections and Poor Immunity
- Children’s Health Issues
- Skin Conditions and Allergies
- And many more.....
What Does a Nutritional Therapy Consultation Involve?
An individual programme** is created to cater for your biochemical uniqueness. We achieve this by asking you to complete a comprehensive nutritional questionnaire, which gives details of your medical and lifestyle history which helps us to understand how your body is currently working. All information given is treated in the strictest confidence.
It is vitally important that the person who is the client has rationale (i.e health goals or aims) for undertaking this therapy, otherwise it highly unlikely to be successful.
Upon receipt of your questionnaire we will arrange a face to face consultation, during which a detailed nutrition programme including any extra nutrients required in order to achieve your health goals, will be formulated for you and tailored to your needs. This may include a recommendation for laboratory tests or a supplement programme if appropriate.
Very often results are achieved relatively quickly but you should bear in mind that occasionally a programme may take a while to not only establish but be effective, especially where there has been a long term health problem or lifestyle changes cannot easily be made.
Fairly often a problem may appear to get worse before it gets better (for example where the body is being cleansed one may experience a 'die off' reaction - such as headaches, joint aches, fatigue etc) as stored toxins are being released and eliminated by the body.
Telephone and email support are available as part of the service between consultations, unless the problems appear to be very detailed in which case another consultation should be arranged.
**Programme Includes –
Consultation, health overview and health improvement action plan, foods to include/avoid, personalised 1 week menu plan, supplement recommendations, lifestyle adjustment recommendations to help achieve client health goals.
